earth day 2022, time to panic!
April 9 - 30, 2022
The world is on fire. Climate chaos is leading to record flooding, fires, sea level rise, drought and melting ice caps. We are living through the early stages of climate meltdown and ecological collapse brought on by the burning of fossil fuels and destruction of natural ecosystems.[1]
World leaders, beholden to the economic and political might of the fossil fuel industry, are playing at addressing the problems while actually doing too little too late.[2]
As the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report states, the world still has the ability to save our future, but governments will only change if people demand it.[3]
Earth Day 2022, Time to Panic! is an exhibit exploring the role of protest art in the climate movement. It focuses on the art of one group in particular, Extinction Rebellion (XR), a global environmental movement with a brand. Its members draw attention to the climate crisis, climate justice and ecological collapse through very public acts of civil disobedience and demonstrations using their XR logo and messaging. Posters, banners and symbols display a group united in a righteously rebellious cause: time is running out on us, mass extinction looms. Specific colors, fonts and symbols are combined in many different ways to creatively get the message across.
The exhibit also features the work of other activist/artists and groups - Sophy Tuttle, Kari Percival, Eileen Ryan, Karin Meyers and Paperhand Puppet Intervention - who, working with XR and other groups such as 350 and Mothers Out Front, bringing their skills and ideas to help forge a common vision of a better future.
